The Cairns Community Kindergarten has been established at 174-178 Gatton Street, Manunda since 1972. Our C&K affiliated centre is a community based, non-profit kindergarten, operated by an elected Committee that is responsible for the general management and financing of the centre. C&K, our Central Governing Body, is the largest non-government early childhood education provider in Queensland.
A Brief History:
A small group of children meeting regularly on a back verandah of a parent’s home under the supervision of a teacher was the beginning of what was to become the Cairns Community Kindergarten.
In February 1971, thirty-two interested parents attended the first meeting. An Association was formed to establish a kindergarten, and to work towards affiliation with the Creche and Kindergarten Association of Queensland (now known as C&K).
A constitution was drafted and was accepted.
The Committee arranged to use of the Guides Hall in James Street in May 1971. Negotiations began with the Lands Department over land in Gatton Street. This land was granted on trust.
Plans were drawn up and the construction of the Centre began at 174-178 Gatton Street.
Due to the tremendous efforts of community fundraising from families and local businesses , the Centre became a reality, and was officially opened by Sir Colin Hannah, the Governor of Queensland on 9 th September 1972.
Since then, additions and improvements have been made at the Centre through planning, maintenance and fundraising by the parents. The Centre is now servicing the second generation of families who were enrolled.
